Active weather alerts

High Surf Warning

Moderate

Tinian; Saipan

High Surf Warning issued October 30 at 3:16AM ChST until October 30 at 4:00PM ChST by NWS Tiyan GU

* WHAT...For the High Surf Warning, dangerously large breaking waves of 12 to 18 feet expected. For the High Surf Advisory, large breaking waves of 8 to 12 feet expected in the surf zone. For the Coastal Flood Statement, isolated minor coastal flooding up to 1 foot expected. For the High Rip Current Risk, dangerous rip currents expected.

* WHERE...North and east facing reefs of Tinian and Saipan.

* WHEN...For the High Surf Warning and Coastal Flood Statement, from 1 AM to 4 PM ChST Friday. For the High Surf Advisory, from 4 PM Friday to 4 PM ChST Saturday. For the High Rip Current Risk, from late tonight through Saturday afternoon.

* IMPACTS...Some water on low lying roads and property. Breaking waves can sweep people off jetties and docks, and into dangerous seas. Life-threatening swimming conditions and significant beach erosion can be expected. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...As TY In-fa moves west-northwest toward the far northern CNMI, seas are expected to rapidly increase dueto the large, long-period northeast swell emanating from In-fa. This has begun to produce dangerous surf along north and east facing reefs. As In-fa progresses, swell will become north, then northwest, resulting in surf building over west facing reefs Friday night. Surf will remain hazardous through at least Saturday afternoon. These surf conditions will maintain a high risk of dangerous rip currents.

Everyone should remain out of the water due to life-threatening surf conditions. Stay off of jetties, piers, and other waterside infrastructure.

Rip currents will be life threatening. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don't swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
