Determination and second chances took center stage at a Guam Community College YouthBuild completion ceremony, marking the end of a six-month program helping young adults earn credentials and workforce skills.
GCC Interim President Dr. Virginia Tudela called the event "a day of celebration, achievement, and hope," telling graduates their accomplishments reflected perseverance and resilience. She said YouthBuild empowers participants to become community leaders and urged them to pursue further education and certifications.
Graduate John Michael Castro Blas said the program transformed his confidence and leadership skills.
"Just standing here right now is proof of that impact," Blas said, adding he once would have declined a chance to speak publicly. He credited YouthBuild with teaching him accountability and responsibility.
Fellow graduate Dominic Josiah Cruz said he joined hoping to improve his future but found more than expected.
"YouthBuild has changed my life by helping me see my potential," Cruz said. "It showed me that no matter where you come from or what challenges you face, you can achieve great things when you stay committed to your goals."
Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero praised GCC's role in workforce development, calling the college a leader in preparing workers for construction, hospitality and healthcare.
"Education is one of the treasures of our island that can never be taken away from you," Leon Guerrero said, urging graduates to use their skills to benefit their families and Guam's future.
Officials cited outcomes from previous cohorts, including graduates working in construction fields and others who helped renovate housing units through community partnerships.
The ceremony marked the completion of YouthBuild Cohort 2, with graduates entering a one-year follow-up period focused on employment and education.
