The University of Guam Land Grant Extension Service will host its fifth Farmer Focus Conference in the Micronesian region on July 1, bringing the event to the island of Chuuk in the Federated States of Micronesia for the first time.
The conference, which follows prior gatherings in Guam, Pohnpei, Yap and Palau, will bring together farmers, fishermen, community leaders and regional partners under the theme "Matawach, Fonuwach, ina Manawach" — Our Ocean, Our Land, Our Lives. Programming will address food security, sustainable livelihoods and mental wellness for those working in agriculture and fisheries.
In addition to technical sessions on climate-resilient agriculture and sustainable fishing, the conference will include workshops focused on mental health, stress management and community support systems — reflecting what organizers describe as a holistic approach to supporting agriculture.
"Farmers and fishermen are the backbone of our island communities, yet they face increasing pressures from climate impacts and economic uncertainty," said Kuan-Ju Chen, an agricultural economist with the UOG Land Grant Extension Service and program director of UOG Farmer Focus.
Steven Young-Uhk, vice president for innovation and sustainability at the College of Micronesia-FSM, said the event is about strengthening the relationship among people, the environment and the future of the islands. "For generations, Micronesian communities have depended on the land and ocean to sustain our way of life," he said.
