The University of Guam Press will celebrate the launch of The Great Peskadot, a new children’s book by Cabrini Cruz Palomo and illustrated by Veronica Cruz, at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, at the Main Pavilion in Ypao Beach Park.
The book follows Maria, a young CHamoru girl who learns to spear fish from her grandfather, Papa David, discovering ocean life, responsible fishing practices and the importance of generational wisdom. Papa David is based on Palomo’s late grandfather, David Cruz, a peskadot from Inalåhan who passed his teachings on to his children and grandchildren.
“I hope this book inspires every child to see the ocean not just as a place of adventure, but as a teacher — that shows us patience, humility and the importance of taking only what we need,” Palomo said.
The book features vibrant illustrations inspired by the people, environment and culture of Guam. “As an illustrator, I love scenes where I can add a variety of little details, especially references of Guåhan and CHamoru culture,” Cruz said.
The public event will include a talaya fishing workshop, conservation and responsible fishing informational booths, an author reading, a book signing and free refreshments.
The Great Peskadot is available for pre-order at uogpress.com for $12 and will be priced at $15 after its official release. The book will be available in local bookstores and on Amazon following the launch.
