The University of Guam hosted the 48th Island-Wide Science Fair on April 11, bringing together student researchers from across Guam to present projects focused on scientific innovation and inquiry.
Among the participants was Rhyne Banzuela, an eighth-grade student from Guahan Academy Charter School, who earned third place in the Division III Chemistry category for her project, “Bioplastic Solution.”
Banzuela’s research explored sustainable alternatives to petroleum-based plastics by examining biodegradable materials as environmentally friendly substitutes. Her project addressed growing concerns over plastic waste and highlighted the potential for eco-conscious scientific solutions.
“I want to thank God for allowing me to participate in this event,” Banzuela said. “Being able to share my ideas showed me that my ideas could take me somewhere. Science isn’t just a hobby for me — it’s a way for me to prepare for the future.”
The project was developed with guidance from mentor Vilma Pascua, GACS Science teacher who supported Banzuela through the research, experimentation and presentation process.
Guahan Academy Charter School sent four students to this year’s competition following the school’s Science Expo in February, where students first presented and defended their research projects before advancing to the island-wide event.
School officials said the expo was designed to strengthen critical thinking skills and encourage students to pursue innovation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Banzuela’s achievement reflects both her commitment to scientific research and the school’s ongoing efforts to expand STEM education opportunities for Guam’s students.
