Winners of the University of Guam's Tritons Night of the Arts were recognized at a small awards ceremony May 8, honoring student talent across visual art and poetry.
The event, held April 9 and sponsored by the Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost in collaboration with the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, featured an art exhibit and a poetry slam competition.
In the art exhibit, Ha'ani Castro, a sophomore in Fine Arts, took first place for "Don't Let Ani Drive the Funny Car" and also won the People's Choice award for "Surprise!" Lauren Melencio placed second for "Hot Summer Day," and third place was shared by Shayza Advincula for "Spider Lily" and Davin Carandang for "Fractured."
More than two dozen works from 15 undergraduate students were displayed across a variety of mediums.
In the poetry slam, Sara Rekdahl, a junior studying English Literature and Political Science, took first place. Nicole Duenas placed second and graduate student Michael Castro placed third. Eight students presented original work judged on writing and performance.
Monetary prizes were sponsored by the UOG Endowment Foundation for the art exhibit and the Society of Emeritus Professors of Retired Scholars for the poetry slam.
"The Tritons Night of the Arts reminds us of two things: how the arts have the power to bring people from different disciplines together and that our students have immense creative talent that should be supported and celebrated," said Senior Vice President and Provost Sharleen Santos-Bamba.
