The Guam Department of Education and the Guam Advisory Panel for Students with Disabilities will host a Special Education Parent Symposium on Oct. 4 at the Hyatt Hotel in Tumon, highlighting 50 years of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. The landmark law, passed in 1975, guarantees equity, inclusion and access for students with disabilities.
This year’s symposium, themed “Navigating the Journey Together,” will bring parents, educators and community partners together to share strategies and strengthen support systems for children with disabilities and their families. Topics include special education services, behavioral supports, community resources, mental health and wellness, future planning and community safety.
The event is a collaborative effort among several agencies and organizations, including GDOE’s Division of Special Education, Zero to Three Early Intervention Services, the University of Guam’s Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, Autism Community Together, the Parent Training & Information Center and the Interagency Coordinating Council.
Organizers describe the symposium as both a professional development opportunity and a celebration of progress made since IDEA’s passage. Participation is free but seating is limited, and parents of students with disabilities are encouraged to register in advance.
