The Department of Public Health and Social Services announced that September will mark the 13th Annual Guam Food Safety Education Month, highlighting the importance of proper food handling and hygiene. Organized by the Division of Environmental Health in partnership with the Guam Food Safety Advisory Group, the campaign has been spearheaded since 2006 to raise awareness about preventing foodborne illness. This year’s theme is “Keep Bacteria at Bay by Keeping Baxter Away!”
The monthlong observance will feature a series of events, beginning with a proclamation signing on Sept. 5 at the Governor’s Complex in Adelup. Additional highlights include a poster contest judging on Sept. 12 at the DEH office in Hagåtña and a food safety conference on Sept. 17 at the University of Guam’s CLASS Lecture Hall.
From Sept. 23 to 25, invited participants will attend training sessions at the University of Guam’s Annex A Building, focusing on best practices for safe food preparation and storage. The campaign will culminate with a community education fair on Sept. 27 at Micronesia Mall, featuring interactive activities and resources for families and businesses.
DPHSS officials said the annual initiative underscores the importance of continued education to reduce the risk of foodborne illness in homes and food establishments. “By promoting safe food practices, we are working to protect the health of our community,” the department said in a statement.
