After rigorous discussions, senators from the 38th Guam Legislature on Friday, unanimously passed an emergency bill to safeguard food assistance for thousands of island residents affected by the ongoing federal government shutdown. The measure, introduced by Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero in a special session, ensures that benefits under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program continue without interruption.
In a statement following the legislative action, the governor’s office thanked lawmakers for acting swiftly to protect Guam’s families at a time of national uncertainty. “When federal uncertainty threatened to cut off critical food assistance to thousands of households, the Legislature came together to make sure that no one in our community is left hungry or without help,” the statement read.
The emergency legislation authorizes the temporary use of local funds to cover lapses in federal disbursements, ensuring more than 18,000 households relying on SNAP and over 3,000 mothers and children supported by WIC will continue receiving benefits through November. The administration also commended the Department of Public Health and Social Services for executing a continuity plan to prevent any disruption in aid.
