The Legislature's Public Safety Committee is recommending amendments to the government's fiscal year 2027 budget that would fund repairs to the Guam Police Department's Crime Lab HVAC system and a new police precinct in Yigo, committee chair Sen. Shawn Gumataotao said Monday.
The recommendations came following a public hearing on GPD's FY 2027 budget request.
"The Public Safety Committee is recommending several amendments to the FY 2027 Budget Bill including funding proposals for critical improvements to GPD's Crime Lab HVAC System and a Police Precinct in Yigo consistent with GPD's ongoing efforts on these priorities," Gumataotao said.
The senator said the committee would continue working with the Finance Committee to ensure officers have resources to support additional recruits and expand police presence across the island's villages.
Gumataotao highlighted several measures advanced by the committee over the past 15 months, including policies prioritizing unused public land for a police precinct in northern Guam and a Public Safety Emergency Communications Center, temporary POST Commission certification for eligible applicants, and improvements to the island's emergency reporting system.
"If approved, these resources will go a long way in supporting the hardworking GPD uniformed and civilian employees as they protect life and property and enforce laws across our communities," Gumataotao said.
