Environmental group Prutehi Guåhan is calling on residents to join a protest Thursday following a schedule change for a meeting between federal officials and the governor regarding ocean policy issues.
Organizers said they were notified by an administration representative that the meeting time was updated, prompting an “UPDATED urgent call to action” for a demonstration opposing deep-sea mining. The protest is now set for 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Governor's Complex, Adelup.
According to the group, the BOEM meeting with the governor has been rescheduled to 3 p.m. the same day. Officials from the federal agency are visiting the Mariana Islands this week to meet with elected leaders, and no public community meetings are currently planned.
Prutehi Guåhan is urging residents to attend when representatives arrive “to send them a clear message: NO DEEP SEA MINING IN THE MARIÅNAS!” Organizers encouraged participants to carpool and prepare for changing weather conditions.
The organization, formerly known as Prutehi Litekyan-Save Ritidian, describes itself as a Guam-based direct-action group focused on protecting natural and cultural resources.
