The Guam Department of Education is recognizing a Jose Rios Middle School student for earning top honors in this year’s regional spelling competition.
Francis Luya, a sixth grader, was named the 2026 Guam Scripps Regional Champion after successfully spelling challenging words such as “physiognomy” and “valence,” securing the title.
According to GDOE, the win marks a significant milestone for Luya, who competed in the regional spelling bee for the third time. Officials said his achievement reflects years of dedication, perseverance and preparation, as well as strong support from his family.
Luya's victory also fulfilled a personal promise he made to his parents to win the competition.
School officials praised his performance and character, noting his impact on the campus community.
“We are incredibly proud of Francis and all that he has accomplished,” said Principal Mariann Lujan. “His dedication, perseverance, and positive attitude continue to motivate him.”
Lujan added that Luya's success brings pride not only to Jose Rios Middle School but also to the broader Guam Department of Education and island community.
GDOE said Luya’s accomplishment serves as an inspiration to other students, highlighting what can be achieved through hard work and resilience.
As the regional champion, Luya will advance to the next level of competition, where he will represent Guam on a larger stage.
