World Theater Productions, in partnership with the Guam Philharmonic Foundation, will bring the award-winning rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar to the University of Guam Calvo Field House from Aug. 29 to 31. The production retells the story of Jesus’ final days largely through the perspective of Judas Iscariot, a narrative choice that sparked debate when the show first debuted.
The Guam staging will be directed by veteran theater artist Benjie Diola, who returns to the island after leading more than 40 productions in Guam and the Philippines. Diola, recently recognized as the Guam Philharmonic Foundation’s first Haligi Laureate, is best known locally for works such as Hairspray, Grease and the ceremonies of the 2016 Festival of the Pacific Arts and Culture.
Dr. Randall Johnson, a retired University of Guam music professor and internationally recognized conductor and composer, will serve as music director. Johnson has been rehearsing the full live orchestra alongside vocalists, with performers hailing from award-winning ensembles such as the Tumon Bay Youth Orchestra and Guam Territorial Band.
The cast includes Nolan Muña as Jesus Christ, RD Gibson and Rick Duenas as Judas, and Nina Terlaje, Krystal Paco-San Agustin and Marianna Hernandez as Mary Magdalene, among other local talent. Tickets range from $25 to $100 and are available at wtpguam.com and guamphilharmonic.org. Performances are scheduled throughout the weekend, with opening night at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 29.
