A new measure introduced by Sen. Shawn Gumataotao aims to expand recreational space in the island’s capital by authorizing the construction and operation of a football pitch near the Hagåtña Pool and the Rick Ninete Tennis Center. Bill 233-38 would allow the Hagåtña Mayor’s Office to plan the project, pursue funding and oversee the facility located across from the mayor’s office.
Gumataotao said the proposed football field and surrounding amenities would provide “exponential benefit” to sports development and tourism while creating a positive environment for families. He noted that nearby public, charter and private schools, along with youth athletic organizations, would gain new opportunities to use the pitch, playground and walking paths envisioned in the measure.
The bill also directs support from the Department of Land Management and encourages public or private partnerships to connect the expanded facility to the Hagåtña Riverwalk Trail, a key component of the Hagåtña Master Plan. Gumataotao said enhancing the area would create a safer, more engaging space for residents and offer visitors additional ways to explore the capital.
