Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero on Friday signed two measures approved by the Guam Legislature into law, including legislation tied to Guam’s tourism economy and recovery efforts following Typhoon Sinlaku.
The measures are now Public Laws 38-125 and 38-126, respectively.
The first law authorizes the A.B. Won Pat International Airport Authority to extend existing concession agreements, a move the governor said would help protect jobs and maintain economic stability within Guam’s tourism sector during ongoing global economic uncertainty.
“Because every dollar a concession pays is a dollar Guam’s families save,” Leon Guerrero said.
The second law waives the 180-day instructional requirement for Guam schools after disruptions caused by Typhoon Sinlaku. The measure was approved unanimously by lawmakers earlier this week in an emergency session.
Leon Guerrero thanked senators for supporting the legislation and specifically acknowledged bipartisan cooperation on the school calendar waiver.
“In moments like these, people expect the government to work together,” she said. “On behalf of our students and families, I appreciate that cooperation.”
The governor said the waiver is intended to provide flexibility for schools, teachers and families as Guam continues recovering from the storm’s impact.
“Recovery is not only about reopening roads or restoring power,” Leon Guerrero said. “It’s about restoring stability and helping families regain a sense of normalcy after difficult times.”
Lawmakers previously said the school waiver would help avoid additional costs associated with extending the academic calendar while allowing educators to focus on learning recovery efforts.
