UPDATE: At 10:30 p.m. Monday, the Guam Fire Department terminated the incident involving a reported “unknown substance” found in the parking lot of St. Anthony Church in Tamuning.
According to GFD spokesperson Nick Garrido, the Guam National Guard’s Civil Support Team, or CST, completed its assessment of the reported unknown substance.
“CST personnel reported no positive detections on their monitoring instruments during the assessment,” Garrido said.
As a result, GFD terminated the incident and units cleared the scene.
Earlier in the evening, a female minor was taken to the Guam Memorial Hospital Authority for potential exposure to the “unknown powdery substance,” according to GFD.
Garrido said units responded to the church parking lot at 3:13 p.m. Monday for the reported substance.
“GFD’s Hazmat Team was activated and conducted an initial assessment. The Guam National Guard’s CST has been activated to assist with further assessment and identification of the reported substance,” Garrido said.
According to GFD, two individuals were reportedly in the “immediate vicinity” and were “potentially” exposed to the unknown substance.
“One female minor was transported to GMH for medical evaluation as a precautionary measure,” Garrido said.
During the incident, the Guam Police Department also responded to the scene. GPD spokesperson Norman Analista said police assisted GFD by providing perimeter security and traffic control in the church parking lot. He confirmed there were no road closures.
Garrido also confirmed the incident did not affect church operations.
