The Guam Department of Education (GDOE) has rolled out targeted literacy training sessions to strengthen instructional practices and improve student outcomes across grade levels. The professional development opportunities, held this week at the Tiyan Central Office, focused on evidence-based approaches aligned with the Science of Reading and specialized support for students facing literacy challenges.
From Sept. 15–17, elementary school educators engaged in training on the Science of Reading, equipping them with strategies to deepen foundational instruction. A separate session, held Sept. 18–19, addressed the needs of English Language Learners (ELLs) and struggling readers at both elementary and secondary levels.
“These trainings reflect our strategic investment in teacher capacity and student success,” said Frank Leon Guerrero, Curriculum-Instruction-Assessment Project Lead. “By aligning professional learning with research-based practices, we’re empowering educators to meet diverse literacy needs with confidence and clarity.”
GDOE officials said additional literacy training sessions are planned throughout the year to build on this momentum and ensure ongoing instructional growth. The effort is part of the department’s broader mission to improve literacy outcomes and equip teachers with the tools needed to support Guam’s diverse student population.
