The Guam Department of Education is recognizing Music in Our Schools Month, highlighting the role of music education in student development and honoring educators across the island for their contributions to school programs.
Throughout March, GDOE schools held performances, collaborations and community events showcasing student talent and emphasizing the importance of music in fostering creativity, discipline and teamwork. From elementary to high school levels, students participated in activities demonstrating how music supports both academic and personal growth, according to the department.
Education officials said music programs have expanded over the past decade, with increased opportunities in secondary schools, the creation of new ensembles and stronger community engagement. The department also noted the return of a new generation of music educators — many of them GDOE graduates — who are now teaching and mentoring students in local schools.
“Music education plays a critical role in developing well-rounded students. Our educators go beyond teaching notes and rhythms — they inspire creativity, build confidence, and create meaningful connections for our students,” said Acting Superintendent Judith T. Won Pat. GDOE said it remains committed to supporting music education as a key component of student development and cultural preservation across Guam’s public schools.
