The Guam Community College (GCC) announced Monday it will no longer host students from the Science is Fun and Awesome (SIFA) Academy Charter School in the upcoming school year.
GCC allowed SIFA to use its campus last school year as a temporary home, but GCC President Judith Guthertz said the college will be prioritizing campus space for its growing postsecondary programs, including workforce training courses and work-ready bootcamps.
"While we are unable to accommodate SIFA students on our campus this academic year, we remain committed to supporting the school during this transition," Guthertz said.
Guthertz said GCC has asked Guam Department of Education leadership to identify "suitable temporary classroom space" for SIFA.
"I have been informed that GDOE is actively working on arrangements to meet the school's needs," Guthertz said.
In a separate release, GDOE acknowledged working "closely" with GCC to find a temporary home for SIFA. Spokesperson Damen Michael Borja said continuity of learning for SIFA students remains the department's top priority.
"Our priority is making sure SIFA students have a stable, appropriate place to continue learning without interruption," Borja said.
GDOE is in "active" discussions with SIFA leadership, Borja said, expressing confidence in their collaboration.
"We will identify a solution that serves the best interests of the SIFA community," he said.
GDOE currently has two unused elementary school campuses in Tamuning — LBJ Elementary School and Chief Brodie Elementary School. When asked whether either campus was an option for SIFA, Borja said, "At this moment no comment can be provided further as communications just started. We will provide more info once the opportunity presents itself."
