People living with diabetes and their caregivers are invited to participate in a four-session diabetes self-care workshop hosted by the University of Guam Land Grant Extension Service beginning Feb. 4.

The Nihi ta Fanmama’tinas (Let’s Cook) Navigating Diabetes Series will run from Feb. 4 to Feb. 14 at the UOG Agriculture and Life Sciences Building. Sessions will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays and from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturdays.

The workshop will cover five key areas of diabetes self-management, including understanding diabetes medications and coping skills, the importance of physical activity and foot care, heart health and prevention of long-term complications, healthy food choices, and goal setting through small lifestyle changes.

Each session will also include a hands-on cooking component focused on meals prepared using the American Diabetes Association’s Diabetes Plate Method. The method emphasizes balanced portions, with half the plate consisting of non-starchy vegetables, one-quarter protein, and one-quarter carbohydrates, without sugary beverages.

The series will be led by Dr. Shelly Laguaña, who holds a doctorate in nutrition, and registered dietitian nutritionist Lenora Matanane, along with UOG Land Grant extension associates Clarissa Barcinas and Elaine de Leon.

Advance registration is required due to limited seating. The registration fee is $30 and covers all four sessions. Registration is available online at https://url.uog.edu/nihi-diabetes.
