The United States and Guam flags are being flown at half-staff in honor of the late Sen. Eulogio "Eloy" Bermudes, the Leon Guerrero-Tenorio administration announced Thursday.
Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero issued the direction July 23, saying she and Lt. Gov. Josh Tenorio join the people of Guam in mourning Bermudes' passing.
"I hereby direct that United States and Guam flags be flown at half-staff at the Governor's Complex and on all public buildings and grounds. I invite the entire island to share this solemn observance. This order shall remain in effect until sunset on the day of interment," the governor said.
The administration described Bermudes as "a patriot, pioneering naval officer, respected public servant, and devoted son of Guam whose lifetime of service strengthened both our island and our nation."
Bermudes was the first CHamoru to graduate from the United States Naval Academy — a historic achievement the administration said broke barriers and expanded opportunities for others.
"He went on to serve with honor in the United States Navy, retiring with the rank of captain after a distinguished military career dedicated to the defense of our nation," the governor's office said.
Bermudes also served Guam as general manager of the Port Authority of Guam and as a senator in the Guam Legislature.
"Whether in uniform, in the Legislature, or in public administration, former Sen. Bermudes led with quiet strength, unwavering integrity, and an enduring sense of duty. His life reflected a simple but profound belief: that public service is measured not by titles held, but by lives touched and opportunities created for those who follow," the governor's office said. "We join our island in giving thanks for his extraordinary life of service and in honoring a legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come. May former Senator and Captain Eulogio 'Eloy' Bermudes rest in eternal peace, and may perpetual light shine upon him."
