The Guam Community College Board of Trustees announced today that Dr. Mary A.Y. Okada concluded her service as President of the College as of 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 20, 2026. Dr. Okada has led the institution since 2007, completing 18 years of service at GCC.
The announcement was made during the BOT’s regular meeting held at 12:00 p.m. today. The Board unanimously appointed Dr. Virginia Charfauros Tudela, the current Vice President for Academic Affairs, as Interim President.
Dr. Okada served as President of GCC until her retirement on December 31, 2025. Throughout her 18-year tenure, her leadership enabled the college to sustain its position as a leader in career and technical education in Guam and maintain its highest level of accreditation from the Accrediting Commission of Community and Junior Colleges.
Dr. Tudela brings extensive knowledge of the College and a deep devotion to academic excellence. Having served in various administrative roles over 23 years, including her pivotal work as Vice President for Academic Affairs, she has been instrumental in GCC’s accreditation and ensuring high standards of quality and effectiveness.
Dr. Okada has offered her experience and knowledge to Dr. Tudela and the Board to ensure a smooth transition.
“I have been here for a long time, and the history of the institution is often critical in making decisions moving forward,” said Dr. Okada. “I offer my mentorship to the leadership whenever they need it. This allows for continuity as the board seeks the next president.”
“Even during this transition, Dr. Okada’s presence will allow us to anchor the past, present, and future,” said Carlo Leon Guerrero, Chairperson of the GCC Board of Trustees. “It is a benefit for all of us to leverage her expertise and experience.
