Fred Bordallo has submitted his resignation as director of the Guam Department of Corrections, citing plans to run for an elected seat in the 39th Guam Legislature.
Bordallo’s resignation is effective March 27. In his letter to Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero, he said the decision was made to ensure the demands of a political campaign do not interfere with the responsibilities of leading the department.
“I recognize the demands of a political campaign will require significant time commitment that would conflict with the critical management and leadership responsibilities required at the Department of Corrections,” Bordallo wrote.
He said the decision was made with the support of his family and close political allies.
Bordallo, whose last day is Friday, thanked Leon Guerrero and Lt. Gov. Josh Tenorio for the opportunity to serve, and said he will assist with the transition to new leadership.
“I will do everything necessary to ensure the department remains on a steady course during my departure,” he said, noting he will support the appointment of an acting director.
