Students at C.L. Taitano Elementary School received hands-on experience, learning how to use interactive STEM kits to apply English in "meaningful, real-world situations according to the Guam Department of Education.
On Thursday GDOE said the students participated in the expanded Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics learning program for English Learners allowing them to apply English skills and build "key student learning outcomes."
The goal was to promote critical thinking and problem-solving skills through hands-on challenges which pushed students to question, predict, test ideas and explain their reasoning.
“Students are not just learning vocabulary or practicing English in isolation. They are using English to collaborate, solve problems, explain their thinking, and create something. That combination of language development and higher-order thinking is at the heart of what we want for our English Learners.” Melissa A.M. Flores, principal of C.L. Taitano Elementary School said.
The experience also focused on effective communication to build students' confidence in listening, speaking, reading and writing through discussions on ideas and recorded observations.
Another goal was technology literacy, allowing students to learn with STEM kits and STEAM tools to develop hands-on technical skills.
According to GDOE the collaborative, open-ended project teach student to test solutions and apply critical thinking to real-world challenges to encourage lifelong learners and socially responsible citizens.
