Brig. Gen. Mike Cruz has resigned as adjutant general of the Guam National Guard, prompting a leadership shift for the island’s military force. Adelup confirmed the resignation Friday and said all procedures surrounding the transition follow Guam law and the authorities that govern the Department of Military Affairs and the Office of the Adjutant General. Cruz’s resignation was effective at close of business the same day.
Communications Director Krystal Paco-San Agustin thanked Cruz for his “many years of honorable service,” calling his professionalism and dedication “deeply respected.” She acknowledged that major transitions within the Guard are never easy but said the administration remains focused on supporting soldiers, airmen and civilian personnel. “We remain confident in the strength and professionalism of the Guam National Guard and the men and women who serve our island with honor,” she said.
Sen. Shawn Gumataotao, who oversees the Guard in the Legislature, said he was surprised by Cruz’s sudden departure. He criticized the abrupt nature of the transition, noting that the ceremonial transfer of leadership “will not happen,” calling it disappointing for service members who expect a process rooted in tradition and stability. He said he is now awaiting the governor’s formal nomination of a successor so the confirmation process can begin.
A letter dated Oct. 13 from Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero signaled her intent to appoint retired U.S. Army Col. Karin L. Watson as the next adjutant general and director of the Department of Military Affairs. The letter to Watson indicates the administration’s plan to ensure continuity of mission as the Guard enters a new chapter.
