Sen. Vincent Borja will host the first Committee on Education Youth Leadership Summit this week, bringing together more than 60 student leaders from across Guam to learn about leadership, civic engagement and government.
The two-day summit, organized by the Legislature’s Committee on Education, Libraries and Public Broadcasting, is scheduled for March 18–19 and will include high school and college students participating in workshops, panel discussions and policy exercises.
The first day will take place at the Guam Museum, while the second day is scheduled at the Hilton Guam Resort & Spa.
“For me, this summit is about investing in the next generation,” Borja said in a statement. “One day these young leaders will be the ones stepping into our roles. It’s our responsibility to start preparing them now by giving them opportunities to learn, ask questions and see firsthand how leadership and government actually work.”
Students participating in the program will work in small groups to examine challenges facing Guam’s education system, research possible solutions and develop policy proposals. At the end of the summit, teams will present their ideas to government leaders and invited guests.
Borja said the program aims to give students a hands-on look at how policies are developed and how decisions are made in government.
“This is really about creating space for young people to be part of the conversation,” Borja said. “Their ideas, their perspectives and their energy are important if we want to keep moving Guam forward.”
Organizers said the summit is designed to encourage youth to take an active role in shaping Guam’s future through leadership and public service.
