The Guam Council on the Arts and Humanities Agency recognized student winners of the Guam America250 Student Contests during an awards ceremony June 19 at the CAHA Gallery.
The contests asked students to reflect on the theme "What does America mean to you?" through art, video and essay submissions across three divisions: Elementary Art (grades 3-5), Middle School Video (grades 6-8) and High School Essay (grades 9-12). Students from public, private and charter schools across Guam took part.
Maria Ulloa Elementary School swept the Elementary Art Contest, with Marku Albesa taking first place, Daniel Daguio second and Jenuell Gimoto third.
Guahan Academy Charter School swept the Middle School Video Contest, with Jayden Rabago placing first, Ezekiel Ricabar second and Natalie Casino third.
In the High School Essay Contest, Kirsten Flores of Academy of Our Lady of Guam placed first, Adrielle De Guzman of Guahan Academy Charter School placed second and Kyria Lim of Tiyan High School placed third.
"CAHA is proud to support programs that give students a chance to share their ideas and creativity," said Angie Taitague, CAHA director. "We are inspired by the effort and thoughtfulness shown by all the participants."
"Programs like this highlight the importance of giving students opportunities to express themselves and be heard," said Monica Guzman, chair of the CAHA Board. "We are proud of their work and the way they engaged with this national commemoration."
The contests are part of Guam's participation in the nationwide America250 commemoration marking the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States.
CAHA thanked participating schools, educators, families, judges and community partners for their support.
