The University of Guam will welcome more than 4,500 international students by the end of 2026 with roughly 1,000 freshmen from Meikai University in Urayasu, Chiba, Japan over the next two weeks.
Meikai University is sending its entire freshman class to participate in the English Adventure Program organized by the University of Guam Global Learning and Engagement Office.
“We want every student who comes through our programs to have an experience they will remember long after they leave Guam,” Carlos Taitano, Director of Global Learning & Engagement said. “They are here to strengthen their English, but they are also learning about CHamoru culture, connecting with our students, and discovering Guam in a way they could not experience in a classroom back home.”
The program will also allow students to interact with UOG students from the UOG international Friendship Club through immersive activities including a scavenger hunt designed to strengthen conversational English skills through friendship and cultural exchange.
UOG said Meikai University students have already started the program participating in a presentation on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
They also participated in a CHamoru Language and culture special lecture by Siñot Cody Lizama, UOG CHamoru Studies instructor, as part of the English Adventure Program hosted by the University of Guam Global Learning & Engagement.
UOG anticipates serving 4,525 international students through its programs by the end of 2026.
“Welcoming more than 4,500 international students in one year demonstrates how the University of Guam can contribute to our island in ways that extend beyond our traditional academic programs," Sharleen Santos-Bamba, Senior Vice President and Provost said.
She said international education programs generate economic activity for hotels, restaurants, transportation providers and other local businesses while strengthening academic partnerships throughout the Asia-Pacific region.
