Three B!BA GUAM JIU-JITSU athletes have been selected to represent Guam at the Asian Sport Jiu-Jitsu Federation (ASJJF) Rolling Tour 7 (ART) in Nagoya, Japan on June 28.
B!BA GUAM JIU-JITSU, formerly CARBS Jui-Jitsu, said Lloyd Cubacub, Gonzalo Quintanilla and Deundhray Steele were each invited by ASJJF represent Guam in three divisions - Masters Black Belt, Masters Brown Belt and Adult Purple Belt Open, respectively.
“Selection to compete at ART 7 is not given—it is earned. It is the result of years of dedication, sacrifice, consistency, and success against high-level competition,” Professor Michael Carbullido, Founder and Head Instructor of B!BA GUAM JIU-JITSU said in a release.
The release said being invited to the Asia-Pacific region's "premier showcase" event is a "testament" of their achievements and respected standings in the jiu-jitsu community.
“Lloyd, Gonzalo, and Deundhray have distinguished themselves not only through their accomplishments on the mats, but through the character, leadership, and professionalism they demonstrate every day. They have become respected representatives of both our academy and our island, and their invitation by the ASJJF reflects the reputation they have built throughout the international jiu-jitsu community," Carbullido said.
B!BA GUAM JIU-JITSU characterized the invitation to ART 7 as a win for Guam's martial arts community and those who may look to them as role models.
“Lloyd, Gonzalo, and Deundhray have invested years into their development as athletes, and this opportunity is a direct reflection of that commitment. ... Their selection to participate in ART 7 is not only a tremendous honor for them personally, but also a proud moment for B!BA GUAM JIU-JITSU and for Guam as they are the only representatives from our island," B!BA GUAM JIU-JITSU Team Manager Kristy Carbullido said.
The competition taking place Sunday, B!BA GUAM JIU-JITSU said, "As these athletes step onto the mats in Nagoya, they do so carrying more than the banner of their academy. They carry the pride of Guam, the support of an entire community, and the opportunity to further demonstrate that the island continues to produce competitors capable of performing among the very best in the world."
