Rio Reyes of Figo’ Bonsai Jiu-Jitsu Academy has been named Athlete of the Year at the Copa De Marianas Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championship, an honor recognizing his standout performance and sportsmanship during the tournament hosted by Marianas Pro Guam.
Reyes earned the distinction after delivering consistent, high-level performances and showing composure beyond his years, according to organizers. The award highlights him as one of Guam’s promising young jiu-jitsu competitors and reflects the training environment at Figo’ Bonsai.
Figo’ Bonsai was founded by twin brothers Luis and Elijah Reyes, who are widely regarded as longtime leaders in Guam’s jiu-jitsu community. Their academy emphasizes not only technical skill but also values such as respect, humility and cultural pride.
In 2024, the Reyes brothers received the Marianas Open Pioneer Award for their contributions to the sport’s growth in the region. Through years of coaching and mentorship, they have helped create opportunities for youth athletes on and off the mat.
Figo’ Bonsai is affiliated with Bonsai Jiu-Jitsu of Japan, founded by the Souza family, linking Guam practitioners to an international lineage. The academy also integrates Chamorro values, including respect, perseverance and community responsibility, into its training philosophy.
Luis Reyes described Rio’s recognition as a meaningful moment for the academy and the broader jiu-jitsu community, crediting the support of coaches, teammates and family.
Reyes’ Athlete of the Year title stands as a milestone for the young competitor and a reflection of Guam’s growing presence in the sport.
