A new cruise route between Guam and Kaohsiung, Taiwan is expected to bring hundreds of additional visitors to the island with each voyage, marking a significant step in expanding tourism and economic partnerships in the region.
During meetings held as part of a joint trade and investment mission led by the Guam Visitors Bureau, Guam Economic Development Authority, and Guam International Airport Authority, Lou Leon Guerrero met with Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-Mai to discuss a new ocean liner cruise service from the Taiwanese port city. The route could bring up to 1,000 passengers to Guam per trip.
Mayor Chen also expressed support for establishing direct flights between Kaohsiung and Guam through China Airlines. The discussion follows earlier meetings with airline officials in Taipei.
“Strengthening transportation links between Guam and Taiwan opens the door to greater tourism, trade, and investment opportunities,” Governor Leon Guerrero said. “These connections make it easier for visitors to experience Guam and for our island to build stronger partnerships across the region.”
The Taiwan mission also included discussions on potential aquaculture and hydroponic investments for Guam. Both industries are part of Taiwan’s advanced technology sector and align with the administration’s focus on expanding STEM initiatives and economic diversification.
Officials also finalized a sister-city agreement between Guam and Kaohsiung, creating a framework for continued collaboration in tourism, trade, investment, and cultural exchange.
The Leon Guerrero–Tenorio Administration says it will continue pursuing strategic partnerships with regional allies to diversify Guam’s economy, expand tourism markets, and create new opportunities for growth.
