Humanities Guåhan (HG) is celebrating its 35th anniversary, reaffirming its mission to foster dialogue, inspire critical thinking, and enrich island life through the humanities.
Founded in 1991 by a group of Guam citizens, HG is a federally recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit affiliated with the National Endowment for the Humanities. Over three and a half decades, the organization has presented programs ranging from family literacy and cultural workshops to documentary screenings, community conversations, and food democracy tours, all designed to explore diverse histories, cultures, and lived experiences.
Despite recent challenges related to staffing and resources, HG’s small but dedicated team, led by its Board of Directors, continues to deliver programs that strengthen community connections and broaden understanding across the island.
Looking ahead, HG will announce anniversary programming and year-long special events, including participation in the national initiative By The People: Conversations Beyond 250, which explores 250 years of U.S. cultural life through community-driven programs.
To sustain its work, HG is launching the Humanities100 fundraising campaign to raise $35,000, which will be matched 1:1 by the Federation of State Humanities Councils with support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The funds will support public humanities programming, offering opportunities for reflection, discourse, and lifelong learning for current and future generations in Guåhan.
