The Guam Marianas Open Organization will host the first-ever Guam Marianas Dumau Open Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Tournament on Saturday, June 20, at the University of Guam Calvo Field House.
The event will feature Gi and No-Gi divisions for kids, teens, adults and masters competitors, offering athletes of all skill levels a chance to compete, gain tournament experience and earn official ranking points through the Asian Sport Jiu-Jitsu Federation. Sanctioned by ASJJF as an official 3-Star Ranked Event and supported by the Dumau apparel brand, the tournament was created as a developmental event within the Guam Marianas series.
While the Guam Marianas Open International Championship remains the organization's premier event, the Dumau Open is designed to give intermediate competitors a chance to sharpen their skills and prepare for larger competitions, while also welcoming first-time and experienced athletes.
"Every black belt was once a white belt competing for the first time," said Steve Shimizu, president of the Marianas Open Organization. "Whether you're stepping onto the mats for the first time or preparing for bigger competitions later in the year, every match is a chance to learn, improve, and grow."
Academies will compete for Top Team honors, and representatives from ART and the Marianas Open will scout athletes for future opportunities. Teams from Guam, the CNMI, Japan, Korea, the Philippines and across the Pacific are expected to participate.
Shimizu also credited the Guam Visitors Bureau's sponsorship for helping strengthen the island's position in sports tourism. "Their generous sponsorship helps us bring athletes to Guam, create opportunities for our local competitors, and continue growing the sport," he said.
