Professional mixed martial artist Jeffrey Mesa will depart Guam this week to compete at Shuriken Fight Series 23 in Auckland, New Zealand, with the event streaming worldwide on UFC Fight Pass.
Mesa is scheduled to fight Saturday, March 7, against Oliver Schmidt, a prospect who trains out of the same camp as Israel Adesanya, according to a news release.
In preparation for the bout, Mesa trained primarily at Spike Studio 22 alongside the Spike 22 team. He also completed sessions at Heights Academy and worked on grappling with Carbs Jiu-Jitsu. Mesa added sparring rounds at RM Sports with Roque Martinez, a UFC veteran, to prepare for the international matchup.
Accompanying Mesa to Auckland will be Kyle Aguon, who has mentored him since he began competing about 15 years ago.
“Without Kyle Aguon’s tutelage, there is no Jeff Mesa today,” Mesa said. “He has been there since the beginning — through the early days, the setbacks, and the growth.”
Organizers said Mesa is among a limited number of Guam-based athletes actively competing at the professional MMA level and representing the island internationally.
