The Guam Power Authority (GPA) has concluded its 2025 Public Power Week community donation drives, delivering food, shoes, and backpacks to local nonprofit partners serving Guam’s families and children in need. The month-long effort, which ran through October, resulted in more than 2,800 non-perishable food items for Catholic Social Services (CSS) and over 500 pairs of new shoes and slippers for Alee Children’s Shelter and Harvest House Guam.
GPA’s Outreach Committee sorted and packed the donations on Oct. 29 before hand-delivering them to the organizations the following day. “The heart of public power is service, not just keeping the lights on, but shining a light on the needs within our island,” said GPA General Manager John M. Benavente, P.E. “What began as a simple call for donations turned into a collective act of compassion.”
This year’s celebration featured a first-ever New Shoe & Slipper Drive, collecting footwear for children and teens in shelters and foster care. “Many of us take for granted the comfort of a good pair of shoes,” said GPA Communications Manager Joyce N. Sayama. “For a child in transition, something as simple as that can restore confidence and dignity.” The Canned Food Drive also restocked CSS’s food pantry just in time for the holidays.
GPA’s community outreach continues into November as volunteers support Special Olympics Guam’s Softball Jamboree, serving as team coaches, supporters, and event staff. “Public power reaches far beyond electricity,” Benavente said. “It strengthens families, uplifts children, and unites our island through service.”
