The Guam Fire Department (GFD) has temporarily suspended search operations for the 28-year-old man who was reported missing Aug. 9 and will resume the search at first light.
GFD said search operations were conducted throughout the day, which included "multiple tank dives and surface-water searches along the reef line and aerial drone operations concentrated on the last known location extending north toward Tanguisson Beach."
"Search efforts today were challenged by poor underwater visibility and extremely hazardous water conditions," GFD said.
As of 6 p.m., the 28-year-old man remains missing.
GFD will resume the search Tuesday morning, "at first light, and will continue coordinating" with the U.S. Coast Guard, Navy HSC-25 and the Guam Police Department.
GFD reminded beachgoers to adhere to the advisory released by the Guam Homeland Security/Office of Civil Defense (GHS/OCD).
A Dangerous Surf and Rip Current Advisory, along with a Small Craft Advisory, is active for Guam. Officials said, "rip current will be life-threatening," further noting that large breaking waves of up to 11 feet are expected along Guam's west and north-facing reefs until 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13.
GHS/OCD urged "inexperienced" swimmers to remain out of the water as a result of the dangerous surf conditions.
"If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don't swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help," the GHS/OCD advisory states.
