Prutehi Guåhan, in partnership with Our Common Wealth 670, will host a community event featuring acclaimed author and political anthropologist David Vine, PhD, to discuss the impacts of militarization across island communities. The event, titled Community Conversation: Militarization in the Mariånas, will take place on Tuesday, November 18, at 6 p.m. at the Guam Museum Theatre, followed by a reception.
Vine, an internationally recognized expert on U.S. militarization, will explore the social, environmental, and geopolitical effects of military presence in island regions, drawing from global case studies and his extensive research. Community members are encouraged to read selected excerpts available online at tinyurl.com/vinereadings
. A limited number of books will also be available for purchase and raffle at the event.
The author’s notable works include The United States of War, Base Nation, and Island of Shame, all of which examine America’s military footprint abroad. Vine is a longtime contributor to Brown University’s Costs of War Project and co-founder of the Network to Dismantle the Military Industrial Complex. His writings have appeared in The New York Times, The Guardian, and Democracy Now.
