The Guam Waterworks Authority reported 73 wells and the Ugum Surface Water Treatment Plant were online on generator power as of 8 p.m. Tuesday, though some villages are experiencing low to no water pressure.
GWA and the Guam Power Authority are conducting assessments to address power issues affecting water and wastewater services in Agana Heights, Barrigada, Chalan Pago-Ordot, Dededo, Maina, Mangilao, Mongmong-Toto-Maite, Nimitz Hill, Sinajana, Talofofo, Yigo and Yona.
“Parts of Agana Heights, Sinajana and Yigo have been restored,” GWA said. The utility said outages and low to no pressure will occur throughout the restoration process as adjustments are made at wells, pump stations and reservoirs in response to power loss, fluctuations, refueling or generator maintenance.
As of 8 p.m. Wednesday, eight water tankers were staged at Santa Teresita Catholic Church in Mangilao; Chalan Palauan, Ironwood and Machanao in Dededo; the Barrigada Library; Chalan La Chance in Yigo; Mongmong, near the former Manglona Mart; an open lot adjacent to the carabao statue in Yona; and the Talofofo Mayor’s Office. GWA will announce locations of additional tankers and flextanks.
Residents are advised to bring their own containers to store and haul water. GWA is also supporting critical care facilities such as clinics and dialysis centers.
The utility’s compliance lab has begun sampling restored points in the distribution system, with results expected in 24 hours and reported to the public. More points will be sampled as restoration continues.
GWA urged strict water conservation during recovery, saying inspectors will visit homes and businesses to seek compliance with special conservation measures.
“Refrain from washing vehicles and pressure washing activity until all zones have been pressurized,” GWA said.
