Ahead of the Bavi’s passage the Guam Waterworks Authority (GWA) worked to complete storm mitigation work on the island’s water and wastewater systems while also urging the community to conserve and prepare water reserves at their home.
A July 3 release from GWA said storm mitigation efforts include ensuring operability of standby generators, performing system adjustments to increase water reservoir supply levels, prepare water tankers and flexitanks for deployment, and additional maintenance on facility water tanks, booster tanks, drainage and gutters.
GWA reported that currently water and wastewater systems are operating normally with 98 production wells online and active ahead of the storm.
GWA officials urged the community to also prepare by taking the following steps.
Storing emergency supplies of water for cleaning, basic sanitation and bathing.
Bathtubs, sinks, and clean plastic buckets may be used to store emergency water sources.
Storing water for drinking or cooking in sanitized food-grade containers with lids and keeping stored drinking water secured and away from direct sunlight and hazardous materials.
Planning to store at least one (1) to two (2) gallons of drinking water per day, per person in your household.
Securing items around homes businesses which may become airborne and potentially damage water meters, outdoor faucets, hose bibs and exposed plumbing.
Conserve water – a sudden influx of non-essential water use like washing cars, flushing driveways and pressure washing may cause pressure issues for everyone in the distribution system.
GWA also asked residents to stay informed throughout the storm with “verified sources,” and report water and wastewater issues experienced to 671-646-4211 or via email alerts@guamwaterworks.org.
