War in the Pacific National Historical Park will honor Memorial Day weekend with a luminaria display at Asan Bay Overlook beginning Saturday, May 23 at 6:30 p.m.
The luminaria will illuminate the Memorial Wall and surrounding grounds in remembrance of U.S. service members who died during the 1941 seizure of Guam and those killed retaking the island during the 1944 Battle of Guam. The wall also commemorates the people of Guam who died during the war and those who endured atrocities during the occupation and liberation of the island.
This year's display replaces the park's traditional Memorial Day flag display at Asan Beach, which sustained significant damage during Typhoon Sinlaku. Recovery efforts at the beach are ongoing.
Community members can volunteer throughout May to help prepare the memorial display and assist with cleanup efforts at Asan Beach. Those interested may email WAPA_Interpretation@nps.gov or call the T. Stell Newman Visitor Center at 671-333-4055.
