In the wake of Typhoon Sinlaku, the University of Guam Land Grant Soil Lab is offering free soil-testing services and analysis for farmers during June and July.
A storm's impact on agricultural fields extends beyond immediate devastation and reduced harvest to longer-term losses in soil productivity, said UOG soil scientist Christianah Oladoye. The months following a storm, she said, are a critical time to assess soil conditions and take measures to maintain and improve future yields.
The Soil Lab crew will visit farmers' fields, collect soil samples and provide crop-specific recommendations to help growers make more informed decisions for the coming seasons.
"Our goal is to stand alongside farmers during recovery by offering tools and knowledge that can help rebuild their productivity and strengthen long-term sustainability," Oladoye said.
Farmers who can provide bonafide farmer certification from the Guam Department of Agriculture are invited to sign up. The service is free for June and July, after which regular rates apply.
