While there are no cyclone warnings or watches, Tropical Storm Bavi formerly, TS 09W is intensifying and organizing as it continues its heading toward the Marianas. Here’s what you need to know.
As of 4:01 p.m. National Weather Service Special Weather Statement, TS Bavi was located 1,015 miles east of Guam and 975 miles southeast of Saipan.
“TS Bavi had maximum sustained winds of 60 mph, up from 45 mph this morning,” Guam Homeland Security Office of Civil Defense Advisory No. 2 issued on July 2, at 5 p.m.
Officials recognized that TS Bavi “could be a significant event” for Guam with far reaching effects in the broader Marians region.
Over the next few days official expect TS Bavi to continue to strengthen and will “likely” pass between Guam and Anatahan as a “well-developed typhoon.”
“The typhoon may undergo rapid intensification before and/or during its approach to the Marianas,” GHSOCD Advisory 2 states.
With the storm is anticipated to reach Guam on Monday, according to officials, “the exact track and how close the center will come to Guam remains uncertain.”
Officials urged residents to prepare now anticipating the possibility of “significant impacts to infrastructure.”
“All residents of Guam should continue to prepare now for the typhoon,” the advisory said. Clear loose debris, secure outdoor items that could become airborne, and clear drainage areas and storm drains around your property.”
Tips about generator use were also provided with GHSOCD reminding the community to only operate a generator outside.
“Never run it inside a house, garage, or any enclosed - even with doors or windows open. Operate outdoors at least 20 feet from your home,” the advisory states.
Officials also recommended that residents check on elderly or disabled neighbors and family members to see if they need help preparing.
