Lt. Gov. Josh Tenorio has secured more than $5 million in federal funding through the Land Water Conservation Fund to construct five new open-air gymnasiums across Guam, in what he described as a major investment in community wellness without drawing on local government funds.
The new recreational facilities will be built in Piti, Humåtak, Inalåhan, Assan-Ma’ina, and Mongmong-Toto-Maite. Each gym, except for the one in Assan-Ma’ina, will include a multipurpose athletic court and a micro skatepark to support the growing interest in skate-related sports. “We wanted to invest directly into our children and their families by building safe and well-equipped recreational facilities that will promote health, wellness, and athleticism at the village level,” Tenorio said.
Village mayors praised the initiative, describing the gyms as transformative for local youth and families. Inalåhan Mayor Anthony Chargualaf said the facility will serve as “a social meeting place for the community,” while Humåtak Mayor Johnny Quinata noted that it will allow young athletes to “safely use [the gym] to level up their athletic skills.” Piti Mayor Jesse Alig called the long-awaited project “a place where our youth, families, and athletes can come together to grow stronger in body, mind, and community spirit.”
The new facilities add to a growing list of sports infrastructure projects under the Leon Guerrero–Tenorio Administration, which has already built or renovated six gyms and launched a $9 million renovation of the Hagåtña Pool. The administration is also seeking additional grants to upgrade facilities in Talo’fo’fo, Yona, Hågat, and Yigo.
