Typhoon Sinlaku strengthened Saturday as Guam remained in Condition of Readiness 3, with officials warning that damaging winds could arrive within 48 hours.
The Joint Information Center said Sinlaku was upgraded to a typhoon Saturday afternoon. A Typhoon Watch remains in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian and Saipan, meaning typhoon conditions are possible within 48 hours.
Joint Region Marianas set Tropical Cyclone Condition of Readiness 3 for military installations effective 10 p.m. Saturday in anticipation of destructive winds.
As of 5 p.m., the storm was located about 565 miles southeast of Guam, moving north-northeast at 5 mph with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph. Forecasts indicate the system could strengthen further and track toward the Marianas, possibly crossing Guam as a Category 3 or 4 typhoon with winds exceeding 130 mph.
Winds are expected to intensify late Sunday, with tropical storm-force conditions possible by Monday morning and typhoon-force winds by Monday evening into Tuesday.
Heavy rainfall between 15 and 20 inches is forecast from Sunday night through Wednesday, raising the risk of flash flooding and mudslides, particularly in central and southern Guam.
Joint Task Force–Micronesia said it remains ready to provide Defense Support of Civil Authorities if requested.
Emergency shelters are being prepared by the Guam Department of Education, with locations and opening times to be announced.
The Guam Solid Waste Authority said facilities will close and trash collection will be suspended from Sunday through Tuesday.
Residents were urged to complete storm preparations, including securing homes, stocking supplies for seven to 10 days.
The Guam Behavioral Health and Wellness Center said its pharmacy will open Sunday morning, while its crisis hotline remains available 24/7 via 988.
