Super Typhoon Sinlaku’s closest point of approach to Guam is expected between 2 and 4 p.m. Tuesday, with gusts of 70 to 80 mph already battering the island and the power grid severed between north and south.
As of 8 a.m., Sinlaku was 140 miles east-northeast of Guam with maximum sustained winds of 165 mph. Guam remains under a Tropical Storm Warning and Typhoon Watch under COR 1. Residents must stay indoors until COR 4 is declared.
Sustained winds of 40 to 60 mph with gusts of 60 to 80 mph and heavy rain are expected through early Tuesday evening. Tropical Storm-Force conditions continue through Wednesday afternoon with dangerous seas through the end of the week.
Power
GPA confirmed the island-wide system has split between north and south due to downed transmission lines, with southern Guam most affected. Power continues flowing to approximately 50 percent of feeders. Crews remain in the field working to avoid a total blackout. GPA dispatch: (671) 475-1472/3/4.
Water
Four GWA wells are offline, causing low to no water pressure in parts of Dededo and Barrigada, including Ironwood, Piga Subdivision, Ysengsong and Leyang. GWA dispatch: (671) 646-4211.
Waste Disposal
Do not use unofficial social media posts identifying temporary waste disposal sites — those locations are not yet official. Early disposal constitutes illegal dumping, punishable by fines of $1,000 or more.
Shelters
Machananao Elementary is full at 92 percent. Island-wide occupancy stands at 851 of 2,623 spaces — 32 percent. Southern shelters remain widely available.
