Seven emergency shelters across Guam were housing 760 residents as of 3 p.m. Wednesday, as the island remained in Condition of Readiness 1 with damaging winds and heavy rain persisting through the evening.
The island's combined shelter capacity stands at 2,623 spaces, placing overall occupancy at 29 percent. While northern shelters continue to see the heaviest use, southern locations remain widely available.
Machananao Elementary School remained the most occupied shelter at 82 percent, with 273 of its 334 spaces filled. Astumbo Elementary School followed at 75 percent capacity with 215 occupants. Maria A. Ulloa Elementary School was at 46 percent with 159 residents sheltering there.
George Washington High School, the island's only central shelter, was at 6 percent capacity with 41 occupants. Southern shelters had the most availability, with Merizo Martyrs Memorial School at 12 percent, Talo'fo'fo Elementary at 6 percent and Inalahan Middle School at 5 percent.
Residents must remain at shelters until Condition of Readiness 4 is officially declared. Authorities said assessments will be conducted Thursday morning to determine whether it is safe to transition to COR 4.
