The Guam Police Department is investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash on Route 1 near Fish Eye Marine Park that killed a 37-year-old man and injured five others. The victim was identified as Francisco Roberto Aguigui, whose next of kin has been notified. The crash, which occurred around 12:10 p.m. Tuesday, marks Guam’s 19th traffic fatality of the year.
According to preliminary information, Port Authority Police were pursuing the coupe driven by Aguigui northbound on Route 1 from Piti at a high rate of speed. The vehicle was traveling in the inner lane toward Asan when it struck a van from behind near the Fish Eye Marine Park area.
The impact caused the van to lose control, cross into the outer lane, veer onto the southbound shoulder and strike a metal guard rail. The coupe continued forward and collided with a concrete utility pole. Guam Fire Department medics used the jaws of life to extricate Aguigui, who was found pulseless. CPR was administered but later discontinued. Dr. R. Eusebio of Guam Memorial Hospital pronounced Aguigui dead at 12:39 p.m.
During a search of Aguigui’s vehicle, officers discovered methamphetamine, a pistol and ammunition. The vehicle was impounded, and the investigation remains ongoing. Police said there is no further releasable information at this time and extended condolences to Aguigui’s family and friends.
