The Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS) will kick off its new Village Outreach Initiative this Saturday, October 11 with a community event in Yona aimed at bringing free health and social services directly to residents. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Yona Community Center.
According to DPHSS, the outreach is designed to make essential resources more accessible to families by providing on-site education, assistance, and preventive care. Services will include free flu and Tdap immunizations for eligible children and adults, as well as education on diabetes, tobacco use, hypertension, and safe food handling. Residents can also access information and support for programs such as SNAP, Medicaid, MIP, and the Medicare & Title III Aging program.
DPHSS encourages participants to bring necessary documentation for immunization services, including a child’s birth certificate, shot record, and valid photo ID. Children must be accompanied by a parent or authorized adult with written consent. The agency noted that TB (PPD) skin tests will not be offered at this event.
Officials say this event marks the beginning of DPHSS’s broader effort to meet residents where they are and strengthen community wellness across the island. By collaborating with village mayors and local partners, the department hopes to empower residents with the information and resources needed to lead healthier lives.
