The Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS) is urging the community to take proactive steps to protect against respiratory viruses such as influenza, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). In new guidance issued Thursday, officials emphasized the importance of vaccinations, hygiene, and precautions to reduce the spread of illness.

DPHSS recommends residents stay current with their immunizations by consulting with their healthcare providers. The department also advises regular handwashing, frequent cleaning of commonly touched surfaces, and improving indoor air quality through increased airflow or HEPA air purifiers. Individuals who are sick are encouraged to wear face masks and avoid close contact with others.

The guidance states that those infected with a respiratory virus should remain at home except to seek medical care. Residents may return to normal activities once their symptoms are improving and they have been fever-free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication. For the five days following their return, DPHSS urges residents to take extra precautions to avoid spreading illness.

Community members are also encouraged to report over-the-counter COVID-19 test results to dphss.surveillance@dphss.guam.gov. Additional information and resources can be found on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website at www.cdc.gov/respiratory-viruses. DPHSS leaders reiterated that staying informed, practicing prevention, and seeking medical care when necessary are key to protecting families and the island community.
