Power restoration to Guam’s island-wide system is progressing on Day 4 of post-Super Typhoon Bavi recovery, with 74% of the system load restored and 87% of feeders and circuits fully or partially energized as of 10 a.m. Saturday.
The Guam Power Authority reported system capacity at 158 megawatts of 266 MW — “adequate” for the current load — as crews focus on distribution lines in villages with minimal damage.
“As power lines heat up, weak points of the system will be apparent (e.g., storm damaged transformers, fuse cutouts, lightning arrestors, connections). Crews will do their best to make immediate repairs; if they cannot, they will return as soon as possible,” GPA said.
Over the next one to three days, crews will focus on Dededo, Tamuning, Tumon and Yigo in the north, and Hagåtña, Chalan Pago-Ordot, Sinajana, Mangilao and Mongmong-Toto-Maite in central Guam. In the south, work continues in Santa Rita-Sumai, Hagåt, Talo’fo’fo’, Inalåhan, Yona, Humåtak and Malesso’.
Customers in isolated pockets with “extensive damages” may still experience outages even as surrounding feeders are energized. Generation personnel are also focused on powering water well and wastewater generators and transitioning critical infrastructure to island power — work continuing into Phase III of recovery.
“GPA understands that residents are eager to have service fully restored and thanks the community for the outpouring of support shown to crews working in villages across the island,” GPA said.
